Since this was driving me nuts, I tried to reimplement the algorithm and it appears to work as the comment in the picture says, i.e. it stops on a non-ws character, newline, and EOF. It does not explicitly handle the null character but that character would likely appear only in a binary file or a file with multibyte strings. Maybe that is the error? It's hard to say since the post does not give any hints.
